Getting your WooCommerce key

Five steps, about two minutes. Everything happens inside your own WordPress admin, and nothing leaves it until you choose to paste the key.

These are sketches of where things sit, not photographs of your screen. Your theme and plugins will change the styling, but the menu names and their order are the ones WooCommerce uses.

Step 1

Open WooCommerce settings

In the left-hand sidebar of your WordPress admin, hover WooCommerce and choose Settings.

sidebar → WooCommerce → Settings
Step 2

Go to the Advanced tab

Settings opens on General. The tabs run across the top — the one you want is Advanced, at the far right.

Settings → Advanced
Step 3

Find REST API, and add a key

Advanced has its own row of links underneath the tabs. Choose REST API, then press Add key.

Advanced → REST API → Add key
Step 4

Fill in three fields

Description Assay so you recognise it later. Leave User as yourself. Permissions must be Read/Write — read alone cannot write the descriptions back, and the connection check will refuse it.

Description, User, Permissions → Generate API key
Step 5

Copy both values, now

WooCommerce shows the consumer key and secret once. Leave the page and they are gone for good — you would have to revoke that key and make another. Copy them straight into the connect page.

copy both before leaving the page

That is the whole job. Paste the two values on the connect page and I will check them straight away. If the key turns out to be read-only, or has a typo, you will be told there and then rather than finding out later.

Changed your mind? The same screen lists every key with a Revoke next to it, and revoking takes effect immediately. Stuck anywhere — write to me and I will get you through it.
